Phenomenons in Africa
Earthquakes in History
- On December 26, 2010, an earthquake shook Africa. Death toll was over 140,000 across 11 countries. There were concerns of more deaths due to cholera and other waterborne diseases after the earthquake.
- Scientists think that a new ocean is forming in Africa after an earthquake made a sidewalk split and form a 3 foot cliff in 2010. Two major plates in Africa are pulling away from each other and forming a new ocean.
Earthquakes Link to Volcanoes
- Two plates pulling apart triggered a volcanic eruption in Ethiopia. This was followed by a series of earthquakes. The splitting causes magma to go through the surface and erupt.
Volcanoes 1
- Scientists are taking deep explorations into the depths of the Nyiragonga volcano. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa.
- Scientists are risking their lives in order to save others. Going into the volcano and trying to predict when it will erupt is dangerous business. The risk is necessary to save those who live in the shadows of the volcano .
Volcanoes 2
- The chain of volcanoes located in Democratic Rebuplic of Congo (DRC) is creating a crack in the Earth's surface making it difficult for animal and plant life to thrive.
- In 2002, lava oozed and burst from Mount Nyiragonga smothering Goma in ash. 100 people died, and 130,000 were left homeless. It was devastating.
